The project

Restoring an Original 1960s School Parquet Floor

As part of a major school refurbishment and structural upgrade, we were asked to assess an original hardwood parquet floor dating back to the 1960s.

The challenge

Decades of heavy daily use with very little maintenance had left the surface dull, heavily worn and damaged. Several areas also contained loose, missing or deteriorated parquet blocks that needed careful repair.

Our assessment

Beneath the worn surface, the tropical hardwood retained excellent restoration potential. We recommended repairing and restoring the original floor instead of replacing it unnecessarily.

The restoration process

A Complete Parquet Floor Restoration Process

The floor required more than surface sanding. We first secured loose blocks and repaired missing or damaged sections, then followed a controlled sanding and finishing system suited to the original tropical hardwood.

The repaired and refinished floor retained its original character while gaining a smooth, durable protective finish.
  • Repair and Stabilise

Loose blocks were secured and missing or damaged sections were carefully repaired before sanding began.

  • Remove the Worn Finish

Heavy-duty 24-grit sanding removed the failed finish and worn surface to expose sound hardwood.

  • Refine the Surface

Progressive sanding refined the parquet through the grit sequence to a smooth 120-grit finish.

  • Prime the Hardwood

A specialist solvent-based primer prepared the tropical hardwood for consistent, reliable finishing.

  • Apply Durable Protection

Two coats of protective lacquer created a hard-wearing finish suitable for a busy school environment.

This considered sequence restored the floor's appearance while retaining the character and value of the original 1960s parquet.
